The Screen Flanders-supported film Le Faux Soir by Michaël R. Roskam is the official closing film of the 53rd edition of Film Fest Gent. In the presence of the cast and crew, the film will close the festival on Saturday 17 October. The film had its world premiere in Toronto and will also close the San Sebastian Film Festival.

With this film, director Roskam pays tribute to one of the most daring acts of the Belgian Resistance during the Second World War: the publication of a fake edition of the newspaper Le Soir – which had been seized by the Germans at the time – in which the occupying forces and their propaganda were openly ridiculed. Belgian actor Arieh Worthalter plays the lead role of Marc “Yvon” Aubrion and heads an impressive Belgian-French cast, including Peter Van de Begin, Ruth Bequart, Karim Leklou, Bouli Lanners, François Damiens, Mara Taquin, Viviane De Muynck, Pierre Gervais and Jan Bijvoet. Cinéart will release *Le Faux Soir* in Belgian cinemas on 2 December 2026.

With Le Faux Soir, Michaël R. Roskam revisits an almost forgotten chapter in Belgian history. On 9 November 1943, the Belgian Resistance succeeded in carrying out the most daring stunt in the history of the underground press, an action that would later inspire other resistance movements across Europe. The roars of laughter that echoed through occupied Belgium were heard as far afield as the Allied capitals, from London to Washington.

I wanted to make a film about the courage of these young men and women. A film that is powerful, funny, tragic and inspiring. In this film, the people reclaim their rights, using humour as their main weapon. Whatever the cost. Regardless of political or social differences, these men and women have united to reclaim what was theirs, to make their fellow countrymen laugh together and to give them hope once more. With this film, I want to encourage the audience to reflect on the power of words as a means of resistance against all forms of oppression. I am honoured that Film Fest Gent has selected the film as its closing film.

Le Faux Soir is a production by Frakas Productions (Jean-Yves Roubin and Cassandre Warnauts), Rectangle Productions / Goodfellas (Alice Girard and Vincent Maraval) and Harbor Men Pictures (Michaël Roskam’s production company), in co-production with Rossel and the newspaper Le Soir.
The film succeeded in bringing together both French-speaking and Flemish financial partners for this project. This was a deliberate choice by both the director and the producers, in terms of the crew, the talent and the financing.

The film is a co-production of RTL Belgium – RTL-TVI – RTL Play, Proximus, Orange and Be tv. In addition, the project received support from the Centre du Cinéma et de l’Audiovisuel de la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, the Flanders Audiovisual Fund (VAF), Eurimages, the Brussels-Capital Region, Wallimage, Screen Flanders, Shelter Prod, Taxshelter.be and ING.
