Co-production
Do you have a project you would like to develop further with Flemish talent, or do you plan to film part of your production in Flanders or use one of the many high-end post-production facilities in the Region? Then we advise you to find a local co-production partner. Through this local partner you will also gain access to the various funds and incentives for audiovisual productions in Flanders (Belgium).
Potential co-production partners
An overview of potential Flemish co-production partners can be found in our selection of Success Stories by selecting ‘Meet The Producers’. These include Flemish production houses that co-produce on a regular basis and have already applied successfully for Screen Flanders support on several occasions. You can also contact VOFTP (Flemish Independent Film & Television Producers) and Flanders Doc.
Co-production treaties
Flanders has concluded co-production treaties with several governments. Such an agreement lays down the conditions a production must meet to be recognised as an official co-production.
An official co-production status ensures that your work is treated as a national production in the countries concerned and can benefit from the support measures in force in those countries.
Currently, co-production agreements are in force with Jordan, France, Israel, Tunisia, and Canada. In addition, the Council of Europe Convention on cinematographic co-productions is also in force.
Which treaty applies?
Multilateral co-productions:
For multi-country co-productions, the Council of Europe Convention on Cinematographic Co-productions applies, provided that it has been ratified by the country of origin of the foreign co-producers.
Bilateral co-productions:
The Council of Europe Convention can also be used for bilateral co-productions within Europe (with the exception of France, with which Flanders has a bilateral agreement). There are also bilateral agreements with Israel, Tunisia, Canada and Jordan.
Old or revised convention?
Check on the Council of Europe website whether the countries concerned have ratified the old convention (ETS No. 147, 1992) or the revised convention (ETS No. 220, 2017). This determines which conditions apply.
