Screen Flanders invests heavily in animation projects
Screen Flanders is to invest 995,000 EUR (about 1,136,000 US$) into six new audiovisual productions. Four of them are animated projects with a Flanders-based animation studio on board. These include animated series Mister Paper, Ollie and Interstellar Ella. Charlotte, the new animated feature by internationally acclaimed French director Bibo Bergeron (A Monster in Paris, Shark Tale) concludes the line-up. Also receiving support are two live-action projects: Swedish-Belgian co-production Breaking Surface by Swedish director Joachim Heden (Framily) and Red Sara, the new feature by Flemish directors Jan Verheyen (Control, The Verdict) and Lien Willaert.
Through the Screen Flanders economic fund, the Flanders government provides financial support to audiovisual productions that spend part or all of their budgets within the Flanders region. Belgian producers can apply for up to 400,000 EUR (about 456,000 US$). Foreign producers can access the fund by co-producing with a Belgian producer who meets the selection criteria.
Productions receiving funding include an impressive line-up of animation projects, all making use of the expertise and know-how of key Flemish animation players (aka Flandriens of Animation).
Flemish stop-motion animation studio Beast Animation (Rusty, Dimitri) will help to create the paper universe of the animated pre-school series Mister Paper. The series, based on the books by Gerda Dendooven and Elvis Peeters, will be helmed by directing duo Steven De Beul and Ben Tesseur (Rusty). Main producer of the series is new Flemish production outlet Mockingbird Productions.
Ollie, is the new pre-school animated series of Ghent-based animation studio and production company Lunanime (Funan, Bloomstreet 11). In the series, directed by Anton Setola (Jazzed), we meet the small owl Ollie who lives in a little park in the middle of the city. Together with his friends he has the craziest adventures in their small forgotten world.
The series Interstellar Ella from Grid Animation (Daily Fables, Captain Morten and the Spider Queen) lets children discover all the universe has to offer and introduces them in a playful way to astrophysical phenomena. This 3D CGI animated series is a co-production between the British production company Tinker Labs and the Canadian production company Ella Animation. Aardman Animation will represent and sell the series internationally.
Animation studio and production company Walking The Dog (Another Day of Life, Fox and Hare) is renewing its collaboration with the French director Bibo Bergeron with the animated feature Charlotte. After a successful collaboration on A Monster in Paris, the Genk-based studio will bring the autobiographical work Life? Or Theatre? by the Jewish artist Charlotte Salomon to life.
The Screen Flanders line-up of supported productions also includes two new live-action feature projects. The Swedish-Belgian survival drama Breaking Surface by Joachim Heden, will be the first production making use of the new LITES studios in Vilvoorde. The production will shoot 17 days of the diving film in the state-of-the art water stage at the studios - the most sophisticated facility on European mainland.
Finally, Screen Flanders will also invest in Red Sara, the new feature film by Flemish directors Jan Verheyen and Lien Willaert. Based on true events, the film tells the touching story of a father prepared to go the distance to save the life of his daughter who is suffering from a rare fatal disease. Main Flemish producer is Eyeworks Film & TV Drama.
