Flanders Animation in the spotlight in Annecy
Animation projects from Flanders will take centre stage during the first edition of the Flanders Animation Focus at this year’s International Animation Film Festival in Annecy. On 17 June, 11 Flemish producers will pitch their upcoming animation features and series to potential co-producers and buyers. The initiative reflects the ambition of the Flanders Audiovisual Fund (VAF) to stimulate the production and international promotion of animation from Flanders.
The Flanders region boasts a wide variety of high-end animation studios and creative talent, resulting over the past few years in nominations and prizes at the Cartoon Tributes and Cartoon d’Or Awards and at numerous animation film festivals around the world.
As well as working on renowned international co-productions such as A Cat in Paris, The Secret of Kells, The Congress, Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart, Phantom Boy, Asterix: The Mansion of the Gods, Ooops! Noah is Gone, Kika & Bob, Picnic with Cake and Dimitri, Flanders’ animation studios have also been developing their own projects. During the Flanders Animation Focus, 11 of these projects, both animation features and series, will be presented to potential co-producers, co-financers, buyers and distributors.
Cafard director Jan Bultheel is to pitch his upcoming feature Canaan, while Grid Animation will be presenting Crazy Island. Cyborn will bring its animation feature Hubris. Creative Conspiracy is working on a series, Three Little Ninjas Delivery Service, the pilot episode of which has been selected for Annecy’s short film programme. Beast Animation will present George & Paul; Lunanime will attend with animation series Ollie. Eyeworks is currently preparing Dudels, while Fabrique Fantastique will be talking about Sir Mouse. Bo’s Bazaar will be pitched by Vivi Film; and Walking the Dog will present Fox & Hare. Finally, Thuristar will reveal more about its series My Knight and Me.
The project pitches will be followed by brief presentations about the Flanders Audiovisual Fund (VAF), the economic fund Screen Flanders and the Belgian Tax Shelter for Film Financing. The main visual of the event was designed by Flemish animator Wouter Bongaerts (Mouse for Sale, Mia) while Grid Animation created a promo reel, the music of which was provided by Frederik Segers of Thuristar.
The Flanders Animation Focus is an initiative of the Flanders Audiovisual Fund (VAF) which aims to put animation from Flanders on the international map. The Fund recently revealed its ambition to support the production of at least one majority Flemish animation feature per year.
